New bill would classify linemen as first responders

In recent years, between unprecedented weather events and the Covid-19 pandemic, a special focus has been placed on who is considered an emergency first responder.

As of now, line utility technicians are not officially included in that definition, but lineworkers around the country often have to work during emergency situations in order to get the power back on, or keep it on, for their fellow Americans. Line technicians service a necessary part of the country’s infrastructure, even if they are not often in public-facing positions.

The Linemen Legacy Act, if approved, will add utility line technicians to Homeland Security’s definition of first responders.
