New program provides a clear path to becoming a lineman

A career as a lineman can be a long and fulfilling one, and now a new program at Jefferson Community and Technical College will train students to become line technicians in ten weeks.

Usually, linemen are trained through apprenticeships, but this new program will provide a clear, direct path to entering the utility industry. Hopeful students will be learning from technicians with years of experience in the field, and the idea is to translate those years of hard-earned experience into just a few months of education. While there is no substitute for on-the-job practice, technicians coming out the program will be better prepared for all the risks that come with working as a line technician than a traditional new apprentice.

The college has employer partners, which should give graduating students a good shot at getting work in the industry. The program enrollment fees also include their gear and CDL certification.
