July 10: Lineman Recognition Day

Many professions enjoy a day of recognition on the official calendar of observances, and now, linemen have joined those ranks. In 2018, a resolution was introduced to the US House of Representatives making July 10 the official Lineman Recognition Day.

July 10 was chosen to honor Henry Miller, a founding member and the first elected president of IBEW, who died while fixing a power outage on July 10, 1891. Working as a lineman is a dangerous but necessary business, and utility workers all over put their lives on the line every day in service to their fellow Americans.

As UWUA President Mike Langford stated, “Without their skill and determination in keeping the lights on and the power flowing, our country literally could not function. Today we say ‘thank you’ to all the line crews who give their all every day so that the rest of us can enjoy safe, healthy communities.”
