Women on the line

The linework industry is, historically, a male-dominated profession. However, the first woman lineman, Rosa Vasquez (who became a lineworker in 1978), was recently inducted into the National Lineman Hall of Fame, an event that highlighted the place of women in the lineman workforce.

According to labor statistics, only 4.1 percent of lineworkers are women. However, because of skilled labor shortages, high wages, and more accepting modern attitudes, now is a great time for women to join the boys on the line. While the work is hard, it’s doable if one is dedicated and willing to handle both the mental and physical loads.

The article linked below features stories from four different women lineworkers. Their tales explore the joys and difficulties–some unique to women, some universal to all–of working in the industry. While their stories vary, their love for the work is the same, which is something all lineworkers–male or female–can relate to.
