Bird rescue: lineman edition

Linemen don’t only work on power issues–sometimes, they get to act as animal saviors as well. When journeyman lineman Bryan English was about to start work on a power pole, he encountered a Harris’s hawk nest, complete with two hatchlings and an egg.

In a situation English described as “trying to scramble eggs without breaking anything,” he got the younglings out of danger and into the hands of a wildlife foundation that will raise the babies and reintroduce them to the wild.

This isn’t a completely unique occurrence–most electric co-ops throughout the country have multiple-level avian protection plans in place, as utility poles make great nesting foundations for all kinds of birds, many of them endangered. So, not only do linemen get to help all the humans they serve, they occasionally get to help mother nature out as well.
